Oral Care Routine for People With Diabetes

When you’re living with diabetes, you are more susceptible to gum inflammation and you’re at a higher risk for developing the advanced stage of gum problems – periodontitis. Maintaining a consistent oral care routine is crucial to your oral health. The basic steps of daily brushing, flossing and rinsing are the same for you as for everyone who wants a cleaner, healthier mouth, but vigilance is key. Refer to the tips below for guidance.

Keep Up with Dentist Visits

Schedule appointments with your dentist at least once, every six months. If you have any chronic illness, you may need to check in more often to ensure you are maintaining your oral health.

Use Smart Tools

  • Toothbrushes with soft bristles or electric toothbrushes

  • Fluoride toothpaste

  • Rinse with anti-germs mouthwash that fights germs in hard-to-reach spots

  • Interdental brushes that can remove food and debris between teeth
